Eye shadow is used to emphasise the eyes. Traditionally this is by applying a dark colour to add a shadow around the eyes, although sometimes you would apply a light shade. Light colours highlight the eyes natural shape, whilst dark colours subtly change the shape of the eye.

There are 3 main types of eye-shadow: powdered eyeshadow, cream eye shadow and liquid eye-shadow.

Powdered Eyeshadow
Powdered eye-shadow comes as loose or pressed powder. Pressed eye-shadow powder is the most commonly used type, can be used to build up colour gradually, and is available is a wide range of colours. Loose eye-shadow powder can be mixed together to form your own shades.

Cream Eyeshadow
Cream eye shadows usually come in a tube. They apply smoothly, and last all day long without creasing. Cream eye-shadows are best used above the crease of the eye.

Liquid Eyeshadow
Liquid eye-shadows come in a tube or bottle usually with an applicator sponge. Liquid eye-shadows apply very smoothly, dry quickly and last a long time. They can be used to get some very dramatic effects that you can't get with powdered eye-shadow.
